Background of the Study
Local governments play a crucial role in promoting public health, particularly in addressing environmental health challenges. Environmental health concerns, such as poor sanitation, waste management, and access to clean water, have significant impacts on the health and well-being of communities (Shittu et al., 2023). In Sokoto State, environmental health issues such as open defecation, water pollution, and inadequate waste disposal systems contribute to the spread of infectious diseases, including cholera, diarrhea, and typhoid (Abubakar et al., 2024). The local government has a responsibility to address these issues through public health interventions, regulatory measures, and community outreach programs.
In Sokoto State, despite some efforts by the local government to improve sanitation and waste management, environmental health remains a major concern due to limited resources, poor infrastructure, and weak enforcement of regulations (Haruna et al., 2023). The effectiveness of local government initiatives in promoting environmental health has not been sufficiently evaluated, and there is a need for a more comprehensive assessment of the role of local authorities in addressing environmental health challenges. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of local government initiatives in improving environmental health in Sokoto State, with a focus on sanitation, waste management, and water quality.
Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts by the local government in Sokoto State to address environmental health issues, public health challenges related to poor sanitation and waste management persist. The local government has not been fully effective in implementing sustainable solutions to these issues, which continue to pose a significant risk to community health. This study will assess the role of local government in promoting environmental health and identify strategies to improve the effectiveness of government interventions in Sokoto State.
